Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician from the United States. Born October 20, 1964, she was the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is also the first female vice-president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general of California in 2011-2017 and a United States senator representing California in 2017-2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She started her career with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She was then recruited to San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected district attorney for San Francisco. In 2010 Harris was appointed Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior United States senator from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sánchez in the 2016 Senate elections, becoming the second African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to be a senator in the United States Senate. As senator, Harris fought for federal de-scheduling of healthcare, and legalization of cannabis, a path to citizenship of undocumented immigrants, and the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. She was praised nationally for her pointed examination of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of assault on a woman.
